The Lichtenberg-Kolleg is Göttingen’s Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Named after one of the most important and versatile representatives of the Göttingen Enlightenment, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, the Kolleg is an international and interdisciplinary research institute and a meeting place for a rich variety of academic cultures. One of our principal aims is to promote interdisciplinary research projects at the University of Göttingen by offering the opportunity to cooperate with international research groups and fellows in order to enhance the international quality of Göttingen research in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Kolleg invites proposals to set up thematic research groups and/or to invite individual scholars as fellows for the academic years 2021-2023.
Proposals can fall within all research areas of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Proposals that seek to build ‘bridges’ between the humanities, the social and natural sciences are also warmly welcome.
Proposals can be for thematic research groups and/or for co-operative research projects with individual international scholars.
Thematic research groups will comprise up to three early career fellows (who have obtained their PhD after October 2015) and one or more mid-career or senior research fellows. Early career fellowships are for two academic years (from 1 October 2021 until 31 July 2023). Early career fellowships are widely advertised and recruited via open competition. Mid-career and senior fellowships are for periods of maximally ten months and are by invitation to international scholars on the basis of proposals from Göttingen faculty members only.
Individual cooperative research projects involve research cooperation of at least two Göttingen faculty members with an international scholar/fellow at mid-career or senior level. The cooperative project can include (but need not be limited to) writing a joint research publication or preparing a joint research project proposal. Mid-career and senior fellowships can be held for a period of up to ten months.
All faculty members of the University of Göttingen who hold a doctoral degree are invited to submit proposals. Both types of proposals must be submitted by at least two faculty members coming from at least two different disciplines. In case of success the Göttingen faculty members involved in the proposal will be invited to join the Kolleg as associate fellows.
Proposals will be submitted to and evaluated by the Kolleg’s International Academic Advisory Board in November. In evaluating and ranking the proposals the board will consider the following criteria which all proposals should address: 1) scholarly merit, originality and significance of the research proposal, 2) theoretical and methodological framework of the research proposal, 3) interdisciplinary potential of the research proposal and researchers, 4) feasibility of the research proposal, and 5) academic achievements relative to career level of all scholars involved in the proposal.
Naturally, in the evaluation and selection process of proposals and fellows, the Kolleg follows the equal opportunity principles of the University of Göttingen.
Please send proposals (in English), containing a one page abstract, a 5 to 10 pages research proposal, CVs and lists of publications of the scholars involved in the proposal to: Martin van Gelderen
The deadline for the submission of proposals is Monday 5 October 2020.
